Three Coal Plants to be closed due to EPA Regulations
Kentucky Utilities (KU) and Louisville Gas and Electric (LG&E) have announced that they are closing three older coal-fired plants due to federal environment regulations. The plants to be closed are the Green River Plant in Central City, the Tyrone Plant in Versailles and the Cane Run Plant in Louisville. KU and LG&E are seeking permission from state regulators to replace the coal-fired plants with a 640-megawatt natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant. The companies have also said that the Cane Run and Green River plants wont be closed until 2016 for reliability reasons.
