Debate Night!!

While that headline might insinuate that I'm somehow really excited for the gubernatorial debate this evening, I have to admit that the exclamation points are really just for effect.  Debates really never give people following the races anything new or particularly surprising to take away.  For example, last night's heated debate between State Auditor candidates Adam Edelen and John Kemper really only proved that such debates often make both candidates look like jerks.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking I'll be taking away from tonight's showdown, too.  However, the reason this evening's debate is a little more interesting than previous gubernatorial forums is that the Governor will actually be attending this time.  He's been criticized for skipping out on previous opportunities because of his massive lead in statewide polls, but tonight Governor Steve Beshear is finally confronting his opponents, David Williams and Gatewood Galbraith.

Predictions (that a two-year-old could make):

  • Beshear will be attacked ferociously by the other two candidates for not attending more debates, education, his allegiance to Obama and the federal government, to name a few.
  • Beshear will do his best to look above the fray and leave it to David Williams to look like an asshole bully.
  • David Williams will eventually not be able to contain the inner schoolyard bully deep inside his soul.
  • The Governor will also renounce any ties to Obama and the EPA (he has none) and totally sell out most of the values that progressives in Kentucky (all 20 of them) hold dear.
  • Gatewood will once again be the only candidate to show a backbone against coal.
  • Every candidate will, at some point, tout their record as a "fighter".
  • And, finally, Gatewood will be stoned (at least, if he wants my vote).
